The marine park is located off the coast of Queensland just south-southwest of the Great Barrier Reef and across from Fraser Island. [See maps.] The Woongarra Marine Park is expected to become part of the new Sandy Marine Park which will encompass the shoreline and reefs from Baffle Creek to Rainbow Beach, including all of Fraser Island, by late 2002 or early 2003. The Woongarra Marine Park Monitoring & Education Project is an initiative of the Australian Marine Conservation Society - Bundaberg & District Branch and is funded by Coastcare. In 2001, the WMPM&EP moved under the auspices of Central Queensland University where it has been granted reseach status.
