We dive from a boat or from the shore to lay out the first transect. The transect consists of a buoy, rope, hand-reel, 50 metre tape measure and weight / pin to allow positioning of transect

The transect layers mark the start of the transect with the buoy, weighting or fixing the rope to the substrate and taking care to prevent damage. This allows easy location for the videography team / boat and will also allow a GPS location to be taken at the site. A twenty-metre tape measure is then laid out along the bottom from the float.

Parallel to the shore, ideally the depth profile is maintained to within +/- 0.3 metres. When videoing, coral bommies are swum over, rather than around and divers are briefed to keep their rate constant to include all natural substrate, e.g. sand, rather than "find an interesting bit!"

Divers are also briefed on depth profile required to allow for tidal level, time etc.
