WOONGARRA MARINE PARK > Rocky Headlands >1 >

Eruption of basalt lava from the volcanic hill Sloping Hummock resulted in predominantly rocky shorelines and reef between Burnett Heads and Elliott Heads.  At the headlands of Hoffman's Rocks, Barolin Rock, Double Rock, and Oldman Rock intertidal zonation of snails and barnacles is most obvious, accompanied by fascinating rock pools.

The Basin, Kelly's BeachThese rock pools contain a host of marine organisms ranging from green and red sea anemones, delicate tubeworms and zoanthid colonies to soft corals, ancient-formed chitons, macro algae and mating snails or their grazed feeding trails.

At the headland north of Kelly's Beach is the 'Basin,' a rounded rock pool cleared by the Kanaka people in the late 1890s to provide safe swimming for children.
