Yellow footed hermit crab

Four types of barnacles are found in the area.  Barnacles are unusual crustaceans. As adults they are completely motionless, living inside a 'house'of plates attached to rocks.  The lid of the house (operculum) closes the barnacle inside.  This lid is made up of four plates and is open when the barnacle is feeding.


Striped legged hermit crab

Several species of oyster occur occur on the rocks, including spiky rock oysters and Queensland rock oysters.  Grazing and predatory snails occur at different levels of the tidal zone, they vary greatly in size, shape and colour. Several species of oyster occur . . . including . . . .

Two species of hermit crabs, the yellowfooted (clibanarius virescens) and striped-legged (clibanarius taeniatus), feature in our Rocky Reef Watch study of hermit crab distribution.

Coastal birds, such as reef herons, terns, oystercatchers, brahminy kites, osprey and sea eagles, are frequestly sighted.
