What is it?

Rocky Reef Watch is a community based monitoring program for intertidal rocky reefs on the Central Queensland coast. Woongarra Marine Park and North Keppel Island (near the Capricorn Coast) have been selected as the initial sites for the development of the program.

What are its goals?

Rocky Reef Watch aims to obtain reliable monitoring data for use in the conservation management of intertidal rocky reefs in Central Queensland,

  • Develop monitoring techniques for the region's rocky shores
  • Utilise community groups to produce reliable data with a minimum amount of specialist assistance
  • Promote understanding and a sense of stewardship about rocky shores within local communities
  • Encourage informed use of rocky shores for ecological and environmental education

The Woongarra Marine Park Monitoring & Education Project is an initiative of the Australian Marine Conservation Society - Bundaberg & District Branch and is funded by Coastcare. In 2001, the WMPM&EP moved under the auspices of Central Queensland University where it has been granted reseach status.
